Friday night recap

Another great Friday night for high school football across Santa Clarita.

Golden Valley still winless all-time versus Valencia

After impressive wins in their first two league games this month, the Golden Valley Grizzlies looked primed to finally break through against the Valencia Vikings.

Unfortunately for Golden Valley, Valencia’s depth wore down the Grizzles and in the final quarter of the game the Vikings scored three unanswered touchdowns to make the final score 42-14. Valencia’s all-time record is versus Golden Valley is now 17 wins and zero losses.

Not only had the Grizzlies scored 41 and 34 points the past two weeks against Castaic and Hart respectively, they also played stout defensive in both outings allowing just 20 points against Hart’s potent offense and completely shouting out Castaic.

What’s more Valencia had already lost three games coming into Friday nights match up against Golden Valley, including a league loses to Sagus.

Canyon breaks Foothill League losing streak vs. Castiac

Canyon finally won their first league game in more than five years with a win over a woeful Castiac team who this year is 0-3 in league play and 1-6 overall.

The Cowboys’ Ganisten Turner rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries and had a touch down en route to Canyon’s 17 to 3 victory over the Coyotes.

Perhaps the biggest play of the game for the Cowboys came right before half time when Canyon’s defensive back Eyezik Ruppert picked off Coyotes quarterback Dominic Espinoza on the 1-yard line.

The play was reminiscent of the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl loss, and left some in the crowd wondering why running backs Castaic Jacob Pimentel or Many Ortiz didn’t take a hand off at the one yard line.

At any rate Castiac would not score any points until the second half after the game was well in hand.

The Cowboys head coach, and Canyon alumnus, Ken Holsenbeck, says he is glad his team got the win, but isn’t going to settle for just one victory in league play this year.

West Ranch outlasts Hart to stay undefeated

On paper Friday night’s game between West Ranch (7-0) and Hart (1-6) looked like a cake walk for the Wildcats who have average almost 50 points per game. But looks can be deceiving.

The Indians defensive scheme was well designed and they ran stunts that West Ranch’s QB, Ryan Staub hadn’t seen all season.

The final score of the game was 20-14 and ended with Hart driving for the go ahead score.

After the game West Ranch’s head coach, Chris Varner had nothing but praise for the game plan of this counter part, Hart’s head coach, Rick Harrington and the Indians entire squad.
